It looked like we were going to have a Kingless week, but the tide turned this morning. By noon, there were about a dozen King hit the deck with as many hooked and lost. We lost count of the hits that were missed. The largest fish was caught by Ernie that weighed 20-pounds 10 ounces. Lures seemed to have the edge over natural bait. The southwest corner was the spot to be. Here is a sample of the catch with Ernie beside his fish and Jeffery & Gemel holding a couple of the fish they caught.
The Spanish Mackerel action was good almost every day. Jerk bait, spoons, bubble rigs, gotchas, jigs and small live Alewives were productive. Most of the fish were average size but the “Axe Handles” were mixed in. Some were almost 5-pounds. Young Max got one of the big ones, while fishing through the rain Monday. As Max flipped the fish over the rail, he lost his footing and hit the deck before his fish did. Luckily, he only had a bruise. Here’s Max, Geo and Larry with a few of the bigger Spanish caught.
Red and Black Drum were on our catch list. A visiting angler caught a nice Black Drum in the rough, skinny water Friday. Reds were caught from the surf out to the end tee. Gemel and Billy decked Reds while trying for Kings on the end tee. Steve and James put a couple just over the slot on the deck back towards the skinny water. All fish were released but Gemel’s which was in slot.
